2011: Year Of The (Google) Panda
Chris Crum | Staff Writer

How did Panda affect you?

Perhaps the biggest story line in Internet search this year has been the ongoing saga of the Google Panda Update. Let's recap, and look ahead to next year.

Has Panda been the most significant thing to happen in search this year to you? If not, what was? Let us know in the comments.

At the beginning of the year, there was a lot of attention being payed to the quality of Google's search results, as the content farm movement was reaching a high search result saturation point. There was also a lot of criticism. Eventually, Google finally took action. It launched in February (globally in April), and initially earned the nickname "Farmer" update. I believe this was coined by Danny Sullivan. Then Google came out and let the world know what its real name was: Panda, named after a Google engineer that goes by Panda.

"He was one of the key guys," explained Google's Amit Singhal in an interview with Wired in early March. "He basically came up with the breakthrough a few months back that made it possible."

So, whether you think Panda has been a great thing for search, or it has ruined your life and/or business, I guess you have this guy to thank. Though, I'm sure if he didn't come up with it, someone else at Google would have come up with something similar. The criticism was getting pretty strong, and Google can't afford to lose users due to poor search quality. Though Google does many, many other things and offers many products that people use on a daily basis, search and advertising are still Google's bread and butter, and Google's quality has still kept it high above competitors in search market share.

We've probably posted close to a hundred Panda-related article at WebProNews this year, if you count the ones leading up to it, about content farms and their effects on search, and the ones about the update before it actually came to be known as Panda. I could probably turn them into a book if I wanted, so I'm not going to rehash it all here, but let's go through some highlights.

Google "Panda" Algorithm Update -- What's Known & What's Possible was an early look at some things that were evident, and what people were speculating about what might be hurting them with the Panda update. There were a lot of good comments on this one too, for further discussion.
Suite101, was one of the sites hit hard by Panda. In that Wired interview, Matt Cutts actually mentioned them by name, saying, "I feel pretty confident about the algorithm on Suite 101."

Happy Holidays from ThinkBIGsites! | Think Big Blog

Happy Holidays from ThinkBIGsites! | Think Big Blog
Seasons Greetings! From all of us here at ThinkBIGsites, we want to wish you a happy, safe, and healthy holidays. Whether it be Christmas, Chanukah, Kwanza, or Festivus, may it be a great one!

As 2011 ends we reflect on so many events and changes in our industry. Search Engine Optimization continues to evolve and change, and while some people “still don’t get it”, online marketing and SEO services continually prove to be an essential business strategy. We continue to see new tools and services introduced that help us drive web traffic, and we find that SEO along with social media are two vital components to a business of any size.

So what does 2012 hold? We continue to see social media growing in importance… Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn and Google+ have all shown themselves to be the big players in the field, but will it stay that way? And how will the tablet revolution change things for everyone?

In October of this year, Google added SSL to search, so if you are signed in to Google and doing a search, SSL is the default setting, whereby Analytics and other services will be unable to report on web traffic and keyword data. Moving forward, how will SEO, PPC, and other online marketing efforts be affected by this? Is this an effort by Google to somehow keep certain info to themselves, or maybe find a way to monetize this strategy?

Whatever happens in 2012, it will sure to be exciting and innovative. We here at ThinkBIGsites will continue to keep watch on changes and events in our industry, and report on them as they occur! So Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from ThinkBIGsites, the leader in targeted web traffic!

Google Algorithm Updates: The Latest Things To Consider

Google Algorithm Updates: The Latest Things To Consider
December 3, 2011

Matt CuttsWe just announced another ten algorithmic changes we've made! Read more here: 33 minutes ago via Tweet Button

Google lists them as follows:

  • Related query results refinements: Sometimes we fetch results for queries that are similar to the actual search you type. This change makes it less likely that these results will rank highly if the original query had a rare word that was dropped in the alternate query. For example, if you are searching for [rare red widgets], you might not be as interested in a page that only mentions "red widgets."
  • More comprehensive indexing: This change makes more long-tail documents available in our index, so they are more likely to rank for relevant queries.
  • New "parked domain" classifier: This is a new algorithm for automatically detecting parked domains. Parked domains are placeholder sites that are seldom useful and often filled with ads. They typically don't have valuable content for our users, so in most cases we prefer not to show them.
  • More autocomplete predictions: With autocomplete, we try to strike a balance between coming up with flexible predictions and remaining true to your intentions. This change makes our prediction algorithm a little more flexible for certain queries, without losing your original intention.
  • Fresher and more complete blog search results: We made a change to our blog search index to get coverage that is both fresher and more comprehensive.
  • Original content: We added new signals to help us make better predictions about which of two similar web pages is the original one.

Google also indicated that it is testing algorithm changes that will look more what appears above the fold of a webpage.

We're getting close to a new year, and there's no reason to expect Google's changes to slow down. Google has been clear, however, that it aims to be more transparent about when these changes occur, and what those changes are. Granted, this transparency will only go so far, because Google will not make all of its signals known, and leave their results too open for gaming. That wouldn't be good for anybody (except maybe Google's competitors).

Google does say that these lists of algorithm changes are now a monthly series.

What do you think about the latest changes? Good or bad?
